Happy Epiphany! So the 12 Days of Christmas are over and with them my semi-suicidal mission to complete a blog post a day. I am alive however and, despite being slightly worse for wear, apparently I can’t get enough… Introducing #theyearinbooks, an initiative from Laura at Circle of Pine Trees, in which the participant commits to reading (at least) one book a month for the duration of the year – I shall certainly be doing the least in this instance!
I am slightly on the back foot already, the date being already the 6th and I have only just collated my list for the year – reading shall commence promptly after I have posted it. I made a similar, private, commitment to myself last year and I think made it to May before life intervened. In an attempt to avoid a similar result this year I have a) joined a community, for motivational and inspirational purposes and b) have selected books of a reasonable length (Kristin Lavransdatter, while glorious, was never going to get read in 30 days!).
So here goes:
JANUARY: The Bridges of Madison County, Robert James Walker.
FEBRUARY: The Scarlett Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
MARCH: Stuff I’ve Been Reading, Nick Hornby.
APRIL: The Adventures of Inspector Lestrade, M J Trow.
MAY: Rebecca, Daphne Du Maurier.
JUNE: My Man Jeeves, P G Wodehouse.
JULY: The Old Curiosity Shop, Charles Dickens.
AUGUST: The Golem and the Djinni, Helene Wecker.
SEPTEMBER: My First Movie: Take Two, Stephen Lowenstein.
OCTOBER: Devil May Care, Sebastian Faulks (as Ian Fleming).
NOVEMBER: The Miniaturist, Jessie Burton.
DECEMBER: Doctor Zhivago, Boris Pasternak.
It’s a bit literature heavy, admittedly, but I thought I really ought plough through the stack of un-read books that stares longingly at me each time I enter the living room, before going shopping!
At the end of each month I will post a short review (kind of) on the book I have just read. Please feel free to read along with me at any stage, if you are so inclined, I’d love to hear your thoughts as well.
Bridges of Madison County, here I come!
